Alex Cooper’s reality TV experiment has officially come to an end.
Love Overboard, the Hulu dating show executive produced by the Call Her Daddy creator, has been cancelled after just one season. The news was first reported by Page Six and has since been confirmed by Variety.
The cancellation is a notable setback for Cooper, especially because Love Overboard was supposed to be one of the biggest television extensions of her rapidly growing Unwell empire.
But here’s the thing: the show itself was never exactly a typical dating reality series.
What Was Love Overboard About?
The concept was pretty straightforward at first.
Twenty-two singles were placed aboard a luxury yacht, where they had to navigate relationships, alliances and competition while trying to find a romantic match.
There was also a twist. Access to the yacht’s best amenities had to be earned, meaning romance wasn’t the only thing happening on board.
The nine-episode first season premiered on Hulu on March 26, 2026, with all episodes released at once.
The show was hosted by Gabby Windey, known for The Bachelorette, The Traitors and Dancing With the Stars, while Cooper served as an executive producer through Unwell Productions.
So Why Did Hulu Cancel It?
The simplest answer is audience performance.
Sources told Page Six that Love Overboard simply wasn’t finding a large enough audience for Disney to continue with another season.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the show was considered a complete failure.
The problem was more about the size of its audience compared with what Hulu already has in the unscripted space.
Shows such as The Kardashians, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives and Vanderpump Villa have established audiences and generate considerably more conversation online. Love Overboard apparently struggled to create that same level of buzz.
And for a reality dating show, online conversation matters. The format depends heavily on viewers becoming attached to contestants, discussing couples and following the drama between episodes.
That kind of momentum never really caught fire for Love Overboard.
The Show Was Alex Cooper’s First Unscripted TV Project
The cancellation is interesting because Cooper has been extremely successful at turning her personal brand into a much bigger media business.
She became a household name through Call Her Daddy, eventually signing a reported $60 million deal with Spotify before expanding Unwell into podcasts, television and other entertainment projects.
Love Overboard was one of the clearest attempts to take that audience into traditional reality television.
It just didn’t produce the same results.
The show was produced by Unwell Productions alongside Jeff Jenkins Productions, 3BMG and Walt Disney Television Alternative.
Who Won Love Overboard?
The first and only season did have a winner.
Gia Aldisert and Tim Demirjian ended the competition as the winning couple and received a $100,000 trip around the world.
Ironically, the season ended only a few months ago, and now viewers already know there won’t be another voyage.
All nine episodes remain available to stream, so the cancellation does not mean the show has disappeared entirely. Hulu currently lists one season with nine episodes.
Is This the End of Alex Cooper and Hulu?
Not even close.
This is probably the most important part of the story.
Despite cancelling Love Overboard, Disney reportedly continues to have a strong relationship with Cooper and is developing additional projects with her.
One of those projects is You Deserve to Know, a scripted Hulu drama starring Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley.
Cooper’s Unwell Productions is also expanding into film. In August, Cooper and Shawn Levy were announced as producers of Netflix’s adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling romance novel Deep End.
So the cancellation looks less like Hulu turning its back on Alex Cooper and more like one particular experiment failing to connect with viewers.
What This Means for Alex Cooper
Love Overboard may have sunk, but Cooper’s larger media business is clearly still moving.
The cancellation does show something important, though. Having a massive podcast audience doesn’t automatically guarantee success in every entertainment format.
People may tune in to Call Her Daddy because they want Alex Cooper talking directly to them. A yacht full of reality contestants is a completely different proposition.
That gap may explain why Love Overboard struggled to build the kind of audience Hulu wanted.
For now, there will be no Love Overboard Season 2.
But Alex Cooper isn’t stepping away from television. If anything, her next projects will show whether the problem was reality dating itself or simply the particular show that tried to make waves this time.
