Ed Sheeran’s U.S. tour took an unexpected turn this week after Macklemore was removed from the remaining dates as an opening act. What started with a political speech at one of Sheeran’s concerts quickly became a wider debate involving free speech, concert venues and the role of politics in live music.
Now, Sheeran has spoken directly to his fans — and apologized.
During his September 19 concert at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field, the singer acknowledged that he had been forced to make difficult decisions during the controversy and said he was sorry for the mistakes he had made.
What Happened Between Ed Sheeran and Macklemore?
Macklemore had been scheduled to support Sheeran on the U.S. leg of his Loop Tour.
The controversy began after Macklemore made pro-Palestinian comments during Sheeran’s September 4 and 5 shows at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. During his set, the rapper told the audience that he wanted to use major stadium stages to say “Free Palestine” and later performed his politically focused song “Hind’s Hall.”
The remarks quickly spread across social media.
An Israeli-American Council petition subsequently called for Macklemore to be removed from the tour, arguing that an Ed Sheeran concert should not become a political rally.
Why Was Macklemore Removed From the Tour?
The decision became complicated because, according to Sheeran, it wasn’t ultimately his decision.
In a statement earlier this week, Sheeran said venues scheduled to host upcoming concerts had indicated they would not allow the shows to go ahead if Macklemore remained on the lineup.
Sheeran said he spoke with venues, promoters and people on different sides of the issue in an effort to find a solution. However, the promoter eventually decided that Macklemore would no longer perform on the remaining dates.
The tour’s promoter, Messina Touring Group, separately said venues had communicated that the concerts could be canceled if Macklemore remained on the bill. The promoter said removing him was intended to prevent the cancellation of shows that would affect hundreds of thousands of ticket holders.
Sheeran Initially Tried to Stay Out of the Politics
Sheeran’s first response emphasized his long-standing decision not to use his concerts as political forums.
He said his shows are intended to bring people together and provide a place for audiences from different backgrounds to enjoy music. At the same time, he said he respected Macklemore’s right to express his beliefs.
That position put Sheeran in an awkward position: he was hosting the tour, but the contractual relationship with Macklemore was handled by the promoter.
The situation became even more complicated when the other supporting acts subsequently announced that they would withdraw from the remaining U.S. dates in solidarity with Macklemore.
Why Did Ed Sheeran Apologize?
Sheeran eventually addressed the controversy in person at his Philadelphia show.
Speaking to the crowd before the concert began, he said he had been dealing with difficult decisions and acknowledged that he had made mistakes.
“I am making mistakes and I’m so, so sorry,” Sheeran told the audience, according to ABC News.
He also went further than his earlier comments by discussing the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Sheeran described the October 2023 Hamas attack as horrific while calling the situation in Gaza catastrophic, unjustifiable and disproportionate. He also expressed concern about broader issues surrounding freedom of speech and artists being prevented from performing because of political expression.
The Controversy Is Bigger Than One Concert
The dispute has now become part of a much broader discussion about whether performers should be able to use concert stages for political statements — and whether venues or promoters should have the authority to respond when those statements create controversy.
For Macklemore, the issue is connected to his long-running public advocacy for Palestinians.
For Sheeran, the episode has highlighted the difficulty of trying to keep a major international tour focused on music while different groups involved in the concerts hold strongly different views.
And for fans, the controversy has created an unusual situation in which an opening act’s political speech ended up overshadowing part of the headline artist’s tour.
