Tonight, on Halloween, Inde Navarrette steps onto the Studio 8H stage as a Saturday Night Live host for the very first time. Gracie Abrams is the musical guest, the show goes out live on NBC at 11:30 p.m. ET, and you can stream it on Peacock too.
It’s a funny little full-circle moment. Not long ago, Navarrette was streaming games on Twitch and walking dogs to pay the bills. Then Obsession happened. The horror film has pulled in north of $520 million worldwide, and the quiet girl from a few TV shows is suddenly the person every talk show wants on its couch.
The promo did the heavy lifting
If you haven’t seen the promo NBC dropped earlier this week, it’s worth the minute. Navarrette opens by cheerfully wishing everyone a happy Valentine’s Day, red dress and all. SNL’s Grace Reiter gently points out that it’s Halloween. Navarrette doesn’t flinch. Obsession, she insists, is a rom-com.
Reiter, understandably, asks in what universe that’s true. And that’s when Navarrette drops the smile into something much scarier and delivers Nikki’s most-quoted line, “No, no, no, don’t do that!”, through gritted teeth. Reiter folds immediately.
What I like about it is that she’s the one making fun of her own breakout. Plenty of first-time hosts get nervous and play it safe. She turned the thing everyone knows her for into the punchline before anyone else could.
The Taylor Swift homework
A few weeks ago, Navarrette said she’d heard Taylor Swift wrote her own monologue when she hosted, and that she wanted to walk in with her own ideas too. That’s a fairly high bar. Swift was 19 when she did it, and she opened with an original song teasing her own tabloid image. Seth Meyers later called it a perfect SNL monologue.
You don’t have to match that to win the night. But showing up with material of your own usually separates a host who’s just visiting from one who’s actually playing.
What to watch for tonight
Expect Halloween sketches, obviously, and probably a few jokes about her Marvel future. She’s playing Rogue in Marvel’s X-Men reboot, and the show rarely lets a new franchise face slide by without a poke. She also reportedly showed up to this week’s read-through doing a Jason Voorhees bit, so the horror-queen persona is clearly on the table.
And then there’s Gracie Abrams, who is back for her second turn as musical guest.
My honest take
The risk tonight is the obvious one. Nikki’s voice is a great trick, but it works because it’s rare. If every sketch leans on it, it stops being a scare and becomes a bit. The hosts who really land on SNL are usually the ones willing to look a little silly, not just a little spooky.
Still, with a movie that big, an award-season buzz building, and a promo this sharp, she’s walking in with more confidence than most first-timers. We’ll see how much of that survives live television.
